Один из наиболее мрачных эпизодов войны во Вьетнаме [Vietnam War], в ходе которого отряд американских солдат под командованием капитана Э. Мединии [Medinia, Ernst] и лейтенанта У. Колли (в советских газетах - Кейли) [Calley, Jr., William] (р. 1943) 16 марта 1968 напал на небольшую южновьетнамскую деревню Ми Лай в провинции Сонгми и, под предлогом того, что деревня якобы служила базой вьетконговцев [Viet Cong], убил около 300 жителей, в том числе стариков, женщин и детей. Эти события были признаны Министерством обороны лишь 16 ноября 1969. В марте 1971 состоялся суд, но из всех организаторов резни военный трибунал осудил только лейтенанта Колли, который, кстати, не признал себя виновным, заявив, что всего лишь исполнял приказ. Он был приговорен к пожизненному тюремному заключению, решением военно-апелляционного суда этот срок был сокращен до 20 лет. Отбыв 10 лет на каторге [hard labor], Колли был освобожден. Трагические события в Сонгми привели к усилению роста антивоенного движения в США.
